Fleet Town 1 Ascot United 3 (FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round Replay)

Well it couldn’t go on for ever and on Tuesday night Fleet just couldn’t make one of their traditional comebacks. Going into the game missing star forward Aaron Redford, Fleet knew that it would be a difficult game but hoped to be able to come through the game. Ascot themselves made a number of changes going into the replay.

The game started in much the same way as the first match with Ascot playing direct and using their long throw as a weapon and again it was this long throw that led to the first goal. Fleet were unable to clear the ball and it was bundled into the net from close range. Ascot’s second goal came quickly after when a free-kick was not cleared and a shot from the edge of the box found the corner of the net. So 2-0 down Fleet were in for a battle again. This scoreline did seem to settle Fleet a little and they started to pass the ball better and make some inroads into the strong Ascot defence. Ironically Fleet’s goal when it came did not involve any passing football, Jake Hammond picked up the ball near the half-way line and his shot come cross found its way into the top corner of the Ascot net. Half-time came with Fleet trailing 2-1.

The second half started with Fleet moving the ball well and trying to keep the ball from going out in their own half to stop Ascot’s dangerous throw-ins. Despite much passing and probing Fleet could not find a way through the strong Ascot defence. Ascot added a third goal on the breakaway with the goal coming from ex-Fleet striker Ian Davies. Despite Ascot having a player sent off Fleet were not able to score again, a number of chances were made but they could not be finished. So our journey in the FA Vase was short this year but we move onto the FA Cup at Chesham on Saturday.
