Horndean 2 Fleet Town 1

A third away game in a row resulted in a third defeat for Fleet this season. Playing another team that had invested heavily during the summer was never going to be easy but Fleet battled hard and in a game of very few chances just came out on the wrong side of the result. With 5 players out injured there were changes to the team that played at Portchester on Saturday.

The first half was even, Horndean playing their normal direct game aiming for the corners of the pitch and Fleet trying to get the ball down a bit more and pass it about. After much arm wrestling and shouting at the ref by both teams Fleet took the lead. Aaron Redford was pushed over in the Horndean box and a penalty awarded. Billy Oram calmly stepped up and scored. Fleet managed to keep the lead longer than at Pagham but not that much longer. A free kick to Horndean on the half way line was being argued by the Fleet players and the referee when he let Horndean take the free kick and about 30 seconds later they scored. A through ball was finished by their centre forward. A second goal came from Horndean when Fleet defenders watched a bouncing ball the home player hit a looping half volley into the back of the Fleet net. Half-time 2-1

After a half-time rocket that most of the ground could hear Fleet came out and played better. They moved the ball around and played some good passing moves without ever having a real cutting edge. There were some long shots and a couple of headers that were close. A real sign of the second half was that neither keeper had a difficult save to make. Full-time 2-1
