AFC Portchester 3 Fleet Town 1

After the FA Cup defeat at Pagham on Tuesday night Fleet travelled to AFC Portchester, the pre-season favourites for the league. With injuries and unavailability of players it was never going to be easy.

The start of the game showed these issues perfectly when AFC Portchester were in a 3 goal lead after 25 minutes. Two goals were scored with through balls to strikers and the third from with a shot from a corner. They had only had 3 shots but they all flew in. This was not to say Fleet were not in the game, Daytroy Thomas had a shot well saved and Fleet had a number of corners that flashed through the box looking for a finish. Half-Time 3-0

The second half started with Fleet confident of a better showing and Portchester sitting back on their lead. For much of the half both teams cancelled each other out without too many chances being made. Things changed in Fleet’s favour when one of the Portchester centre backs, who had already been booked, told the referee to go away after a foul challenge. His use of language resulted in him leaving the field of play for the rest of the game. This, associated with some substitutions and a change in formation bought Fleet back into the game. Fleet ultimately scored when substitute Aaron Redford bicycle kicked a Durrell Brown cross into the top corner. Another highlight goal for Aaron. Fleet pushed on but couldn’t get a 2nd goal despite some goal mouth scrambles. Full-time 3-1
