Fleet Town 0 British Army 1
Fleet Town lost their grip on the Aldershot Senior Cup with this very narrow defeat by the British Army, who included Southern League starman Keith Emmerson who has helped Taunton Town to the West Division Title since leaving Farnborough earlier this season.
The British Army side dominated posession for most of the first half, plenty of crisp, quick and accurate passes, until they reached the area, where things broke down or a simple task for Liam Beach, to collect or save. It was 20 minutes before Fleet came close, when a James Haworth effort was headed behind for a corner. After the corner, Danilo Cadete quickly won the ball back and his ball in was headed over by Matt Bunyan. In front of goal the ball was not running for either sides forwards, even when a free kick for the Army found its target inside the six yard box, the ball was headed down and struck Liam Beach’s feet. Fleet were being kept back in their own half, many times when they tried to get the ball downfield, they were stopped by Keith Emmerson around the half way line, heading the ball back deep into the Fleet defence. But just before the break Fleet had the ball at the other end, from a corner, Fleet got their chance to snatch the lead but were denied by a goal line clearance.
The second half was more even, with one of Fleet’s best moves early in the half when Matt Bunyan found Danilo Cadete down the left, his cross found Bradley Wilson, his shot was past the keeper before a defender got back and stuck a leg out to stop the goal at the expense of a corner, from which Matt Bunyan headed over. But then the one moment of fortune favoured the visitors, a good break from the Army but some untidy play in the box and Sam Atkinson was in and got what turned out to be the only goal of the game. Another good performance from Youth player Ross Ewen, his young legs, seeing him cover large areas of the pitchThe final half an hour of the match belonged to Fleet, who did everything but score. A ball played over into space and in a race between Matt Bunyan and Army keeper Mike Davies, it was Matt who got their first, but had to rush his contact and headed wide. Only seconds later, Fleet got the ball back and Danilo Cadete shot just wide. A quick breakout by the visitors saw a chance fall to Daniel Stoneham, which needed a flying save from Liam Beach to tip the ball away. Liam was soon in action again, following a corner, the Army got the ball back and Keith Emmerson had the chance for glory, his fine strike being pushed away by Beach for another corner. On the attack, Jack Selby, a regular in our Youth Side, was in the right place at the right time, but unfortunately his effort hit the post and stayed in play to be cleared. Fleet kept pushing and came so close to forcing the game into extra time but the ball did not run for them and stayed out giving the Army side the victory and a place in the Semi-Final.
This was now Fleet’s last home match of the 2017-18 season, with just the rearranged League game at Bedford Town on Saturday afternoon left to play.
