Fleet Town 1 Colliers Wood 2

A bright sunny August day heralded Fleet’s return to the Combined Counties League after a gap of nearly 40 years. On the back of their victory in the FA Cup at Bridport Fleet were hopeful of a good result. There were player changes in the squad for Fleet but the team looked on paper to be nearly the best available.

The first half started with bot teams moving the ball around and attacking well, both created chances but were unable to really test the goalkeepers. As the half settled into a reasonably solid match both sides were starting to feel the heat of the afternoon. The first goal came from a Colliers Wood freekick that all the players left except the Colliers Wood player at the back post who managed to get to the ball and play it back into the centre for his team mate to side foot in. Despite much possession Fleet didn’t really challenge the Colliers Wood goal for the rest of the half, while the Fleet goalkeeper made at least one good save. Half-time 0-1

As the second half progressed Fleet changed to a back 3 to try and push on more, both sides made half chances but were unable to capitalise. Fleet’s equaliser came when James Beauchamp was able to run onto an under hit back pass round the goalkeeper and beat the defender on the line with his shot. Fleet really should have taken the lead soon after when Ryan Ba was played in but his shot went wide of the far post. The winning goal for Colliers Wood came from a break down the right hand side which was converted by their sliding in striker, this proved to be the winning goal. The only things of note after this were a melee involving most of the players and fly over by the red arrows. Full -time 1-2
