Fleet Town 1 East Grinstead Town 2

In this full blooded cup tie, played at a frantic pace, it was the Wasps of East Grinstead that had the sting in the tail to take the spoils and progress to the next round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The early action was concentrated in midfield, both sides looking determinated for the early break through, with players looking to pass the ball on as quickly as possible. Despite the good build up play, neither side looked threatening in front of goal until the visitors won their first corner after fourteen minutes. Shortly after this Fleet were forced into an early change when Billy Oram, made captain  for this match, found his shoulder, injured in last Saturday’s game, had not recovered enough for him to last the game. From the restart Fleet went downfield ending with Danilo Cadete getting his shot away, only to see it finish in the hands of keeper Sheikh Ceesay. The breakthrough came just before the half hour, following a foul on Simon Mulumba, the free kick was expertly delivered by Danilo, into the box and Imran Uche rose above the defence and his powerful header flew into the net. The visitors took the game to Fleet with a string of crosses and corners, as they looked for a way back into the game, but the Fleet defence stood firm with Brendan Norris getting to everything near him and his defenders easily clearing everything else. At the break the visitors thought it might not be their day having a little more of the ball but nothing to show for it.

The second half started with more of the same, both sides threatening but not getting close, the visitors won an early corner when their attack was thwarted by Danilo Cadete whose clearance just going over his own crossbar. Then up the other end it was Danilo’s control around the D to keep the ball under immense pressure and then make space to take the ball out wide and get a cross in for Simon Mulumba to head just over the bar. Fleet were soon back on the attack a fine run down the left from Abdul Rajab, he cut in and from a very narrow angle fired a cross/shot over and was so unlucky to see the ball crash off the foot of his far post, the ball ran loose to Fleet’s Riccardo Andrady, he took the ball towards the by-line to cross the ball which keeper Ceesay pushed round the post for another corner to the home side. The game suddenly turned to East Grinstead with George Landais firing home from the right corner of the box to equalize. Almost immediately Jordy Mongoy powered through the middle of Fleet’s defense to slot the ball home and get the Wasps ahead, in the wild celebration that followed in front of the visitors noisy travelling fans, Mongoy was left on the deck and unable to continue. Try as they might, there was not enough time left for Fleet to find a second goal that could have given them the replay they deserved.

The Man of the Match sponsored by Easi-Leaflets, was given to goal scorer Imran Uche, as much for his defensive work as the goal.
