Fleet Town 3 Newent Town 1

Fleet started their journey in this seasons FA Vase with a home tie against Newent Town AFC of Hellenic League Division One West. The visitors had a long journey from Gloucestershire but arrived in good spirits. Fleet welcomed the debuts of Leo Decarbo and Yassa Arafat and the return of fan favourite Dan Framp.

After recent games it was a delight to see Fleet start quickly and take the lead in the first couple of minutes. A deep cross from the right wing was met at close range by Tom Wensley who was able to convert the chance. Fleet continued in this form and were putting Newent under pressure in their own half. A second goal came when debutant Leo Decardo received a pass on the edge of the box and drilled it into the top corner. Not a bad debut goal. The game then came a bit more controlled and Newent grew into it. Both teams made chances but the finishing didn’t match the build up play. Half-time 2-0

Fleet came out after half-time knowing that a few controlled minutes of football may help seal the game. Within 20 seconds of the restart Newent had scored…a good break was finished from close range. Fleet certainly know how to make things difficult and for the next 20 minutes you certainly wouldn’t have known which club played at the higher level. Newent played direct football and caused problems to the three Fleet centre backs and on a number of occasions they got through to the Fleet goalkeeper. Harry Nash was up to the task and made the saves he needed to. The last part of the game was like basketball match with both teams attacking each other with little defence. Both sides made chances with Fleet missing a number or the Newent goalkeeper saving well. Eventually Fleet got the much needed third goal when Mal Thomas was played through and he squeezed the ball into the net. Full-time 3-1
